Where to start designing a kitchen? What if you eat only vegetables? How should a girl 150 cm tall arrange the kitchen? Answers to these questions and not just that.
Arrangement and repair of the kitchen is one of the most expensive items in the budget: it is necessary to find room for furniture, household appliances and a dining area in a small space. Designing this space is a truly individual process: the position and filling of the cabinets depends on the needs and lifestyle of the apartment owners.
The first thing you need to do before starting to design the kitchen is to arm yourself with the basics of ergonomics: this knowledge will help you to position the ready-made kitchen correctly and calculate the height of the drawers, tabletop, shelves and other things. In addition, you need to answer the following questions:
- How many people are in the family?
- What lifestyle and nutrition do the owners adhere to?
- Who cooks most often?
It is necessary to provide different storage systems depending on what family members eat. For example, an ordinary refrigerator won’t work for vegans and rawatarians: such people eat a large amount of fruits and vegetables, therefore, there should be more storage space for these products than one standard compartment in the refrigerator. In this case, you can consider installing a refrigerator without a freezer, and install the freezer separately, under the tabletop.
When transferring the refrigerator to the room adjacent to the kitchen, the main thing is to place it so that the sink and the food distribution area are at a distance of no more than 2.5 meters. Otherwise, the operation of such a refrigerator will be simply uncomfortable.
Where to place kitchen gadgets?
There are a lot of household appliances which steal the precious space of the worktop: multicooker, bread maker, toaster, blender, microwave and others. Make a complete list of gadgets which are used in the kitchen, and think over the storage place for each and every one. If there was no place at the design stage, then all of them will live in the working area - with all the attendant consequences: a pile of greasy wires covered with stuck dust, lack of sufficient cooking space, complete chaos and mess.
In order to organize the kitchen space properly, divide all kitchen utensils and products into several groups:
- household equipment (refrigerator, hob, oven, etc.);
- additional household appliances (blender, kettle, toaster, etc.);
- utensils (plates, cups, glasses, bowls, pots, stewpots and cutlery);
- ousehold chemicals and consumables (cleaning products, dishwasher tablets, napkins, skewers, bags, foil, gloves, sponges, etc.);
- bulk stock (cereals, flour, spices, sugar, salt);
- other products (oil, vinegar, canned food, potatoes, etc.);
- garbage and household waste.
Having described all the products and items to be placed in the kitchen, you can estimate the required number of drawers, shelves, pull-out nets and compartments for storing small and large-sized items. Nowadays, there is a huge number of storage systems - the choice is limited only by your budget, which must be determined at the stage of drafting the kitchen design specification.
